What Should I Expect From My Elected Official?

When we go to the polls in municipal elections, we are effectively electing members of our OWN community that we feel and hope will best represent the direction residents would like to see the county go. When that hope holds true, a symbiotic relationship develops between division residents, and the division representative, or Councillor.

As your representative, the councillor in your division has sworn an oath to uphold the law. In Thorhild County, the oath that our current Councillors have sworn reads as follows:

“I_________, solemnly swear and truly declare and affirm that I will diligently, faithfully and to the best of my ability execute according to law the office of ________ (Reeve, Deputy Reeve, or Councillor) of Thorhild County”

Once elected and sworn in, Council members are duly governed by a Code of Conduct.  The Thorhild County Council Code of Conduct Bylaw can be found here:

County Council Code of Conduct Bylaw

Essentially it requires that all council members act in good faith to serve their community and abide by the law, conduct themselves in a professional, respectful and transparent manner in all matters, promote public confidence and ensure that their conduct always bear close public scrutiny.

Though there is no “law” that requires your council member to personally communicate with you by any particular means or with any particular frequency, as a matter of the above qualities of fairness, transparency and good faith, it is reasonable to expect that the Concillor from your Division represent you, and address your concerns in a timely manner.
